Out There is a project that celebrates the extraordinary and the obvious and maximises one of the most valuable resources: your own doorstep. Venturing beyond the school gate, stepping out into the outside world, learning professionals guide the children around their square mile, listening, watching and experiencing the world around them. What’s that? What is it for? Who lives there? ……… many questions that can lead to discovery and knowledge about the children’s own locality and their experience of it.

Through exploring the diverse range of art,design and craft work in this resource users will have the opportunity to experience the richness of contemporary art in Wales. The resource is organised in such a way that each creative area is divided into themes to encourage users to recognise the potential to engage with a variety of artists’ work.

Looking at the processes involved in creating a 3D fantasy creature. From creating a 'spider' diagram with a mix of words and pictures to drawing and creating a unique creature. This resource has been broken down into 12 stages and is presented as a number of powerpoints and, for the larger presentations, zipped up files.

A unit of work focused on the research and development of small sculptures using recycled materials. The work of a variety of artists using this medium can be explored before completing the activity with powerpoints and documents supporting project work and providing step-by-step procedures for teachers and students. PLEASE NOTE: The 7 artists whose works appear in this resource have all given their permission for NGfL Cymru to use a select number of images. Any other use of these images is forbidden without consulting each artist first.

An interactive whiteboard resource that introduces children to primary and secondary colours.

An interactive whiteboard resource that teaches the names of basic 2D shapes and allows the child to create shape pictures.

This activity introduces the class to the idea that shapes can be used to draw pictures of everyday objects. Pupils firstly look at a shape picture and discuss the shapes they can see. They are then able to create their own shape picture using a variety of shapes provided on the screen (eg a house, people, animals). Pupils can then use a fill tool to colour their pictures before printing. Practical activities using the idea of shapes in pictures are suggested for individual or group work.

This is a colour-mixing activity. It shows pupils what happens when they mix the primary colours red, yellow and blue. Pupils drag and drop colours into a colour-mixing machine that mixes the colours and makes the appropriate secondary colour. Pupils learn the basic colour theory and the terminology 'primary' and 'secondary' colours. They then apply their knowledge to a simple colouring-in exercise where they have a palette of primary colours that they use to make the secondary colours. Follow-up activities using paints have been suggested for pupils to explore colour mixing first hand.

A resource based on a selection of Peter Prendergast's work from his exhibition 'A Painters Quarry&' held at Oriel Môn in 2006. NGfL Cymru is grateful to Peter Prendergast for allowing his work to be shared amongst schools in Wales. This interactive whiteboard resource uses a selection of Peter Prendergast’s landscapes and figure studies as the stimulus for discussion, critical analysis and practical work.

By the end of this lesson students should be able to: * identify some different styles of portraiture * learn about paintings that can be seen at the National Museum of Wales * transfer their work via a digital camera or scanner to a simple graphics programme * learn about the technique of pointillism * use a computer to help them research and use images to produce original artwork * develop their research into art work, print, painting or computer graphics images.

By the end of this lesson you should have an understanding of: * the significance of chapels with regard to the visual landscape and townscape of Wales * architectural features that are common to Welsh chapels * the three main Classical orders * observational/analytical drawing techniques
